The studio

Small team, wide range

Kyokuto is a distributed studio of six designers, writers, and engineers. We started in 2023 to answer one question: what does a design practice look like when generation is free?

Taste is the scarce resource

Models removed the cost of making the first hundred options. They did not remove the need to choose. Our whole practice is built around that shift: generate aggressively, judge slowly, and only ship work that would survive without the story of how it was made.

We keep the team deliberately small. Every project has a senior person on it from brief to handoff, and nothing is outsourced to a junior queue.

Principles

Four things we hold to

Principle

Show the failures

Clients see the discarded directions. It makes the chosen one legible and the decision shared.

Principle

Craft the last 10%

Kerning, grid, copy, and motion are done by hand. That is where generated work usually falls apart.

Principle

Leave the tools behind

Every engagement ends with documentation your team can run without us.

Principle

Be honest about provenance

We disclose what was generated, what was licensed, and what was drawn. Always in writing.

People

Who you will actually talk to

Six people, four time zones, one shared review call each week.

R. Aoki

Creative director

Fifteen years in brand and editorial design. Leads art direction on every engagement.

M. Delacroix

Design engineer

Builds the pipelines, the design systems, and the front-end we hand over.

S. Idris

Writer & strategist

Naming, voice, and the briefs that keep generative work from drifting.

We are not trying to replace studios. We are trying to make the boring 70% of a project disappear so the interesting 30% gets more attention. — R. Aoki, creative director

Working on something unusual?

Those are our favourite briefs. Tell us what nobody else wanted to take on.
